MUSIC EDUCATION FOR THE YOUTH

Young People's Concerts

Young People’s Concerts are scheduled for the Koger Center for the Arts at 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on February 27, 2012, and February 28, 2012. This program is available to kindergarten through fifth grade students in both the public and private schools in our state. The concerts are conducted by Morihiko Nakahara, Music Director for the South Carolina Philharmonic (SCP). The SCP is a proud partner of “Link Up,” a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute. Young People’s Concerts provide an enhanced program that explores orchestral repertoire through a hands-on-music education exposure to many of the instruments of the orchestra even to conducting. Symphony League volunteers provide a light breakfast and lunch for the orchestra on concert days.

Additional Programs

Other programs that the SCP supports are Adopt-a-Musician, an in-school education program that provides individual classrooms the opportunity to get to know a SCP musician and learn about his or her daily life; Carnival of the Animals, an in-school concert features SCP musicians performing the music of Saint-Saens while showcasing students’ animal-themed poetry and art work; Peter and the Wolf, an in-school, bilingual production of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf that involves students acting out the story using Spanish dialog; and Kid-to-Concerts that provides more than 450 underserved and at-risk students and their families to experience SCP concerts.

For more information about educational opportunities, contact Audience Services Director Jason Rapp at 803.771.7937 or via e-mail.

Youth Orchestra Concerts

Open to all qualified school-age students throughout the state by competitive audition, the Youth Orchestras perform three concerts each year. After auditioning, students are placed in one of three orchestras: The Youth Orchestra, conducted by Jerry Gatch; the Repertory conducted by Maurice Hood; or Strings Orchestra conducted by Andrew Preston. The concerts, all held at the Koger Center for the Arts at 3:30 p.m., are as follows:

  • Sunday, November 6, 2011
  • Sunday, February 12, 2012
  • Sunday, April 29, 2012

General admission tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and may be purchased at the ticket kiosk in the Koger Center lobby one hour before the concert. The Symphony League is a major contributor of the programs and assists with volunteers for the ticket kiosk.
