MUSIC EDUCATION FOR THE YOUTH

Young People's Concerts | Anatomy of the Orchestra

The doctors will see you now!

You won’t see any lab coats when Music Director Morihiko Nakahara and emcee Joe “Mr. Knozit” Pinner (pictured right) dissect the distinct sections that make up a symphony orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion, and then put them back together!

Music from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Carmen by Bizet, music from Harry Potter and the Dvorak New World Symphony and more highlight this 45-minute performance, which will also feature a surprise guest conductor: a student selected at random from the audience to conduct the orchestra through Sousa’s Washington Post March.

Admission: $3.50 per person. Groups of 200+ are $3 per person.

Geared toward students in grades K-6.

  • Tuesday, February 22, 2011, 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
  • Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Youth Orchestra Concerts

Open to all qualified school-age students throughout the state by competitive audition, the Youth Orchestras perform three concerts each year. After auditioning, students are placed in one of three orchestras: The Youth Orchestra, conducted by Jerry Gatch; the Repertory conducted by Maurice Hood; or Strings Orchestra conducted by Andrew Preston. The concerts, all held at the Koger Center for the Arts at 3:00 p.m., are as follows:

  • Sunday, October 17, 2010
  • Sunday, February 13, 2011
  • Sunday, May 1, 2011

General admission tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Tickets may only be purchased at the ticket kiosk in the Koger Center lobby one hour before the concert.
